Forza Horizon 6: fixing understeer, oversteer and wheelspin

Most tuning comes down to three feelings: the car won’t turn in, the rear steps out, or the driven wheels spin up. Here is what each one means and the small changes that fix it, in plain words. Change one thing at a time, then drive the same corner again.

Understeer: the car runs wide

You turn in and the front tyres slide: the nose carries on toward the outside of the corner. The front needs more grip, or the rear a little less.

  • Soften the front anti-roll bar by about 15%, or stiffen the rear one by about 10%.
  • Soften the front springs a touch (about 6%), or firm up the rear ones (about 4%).
  • Add 0.3° of negative camber at the front.
  • Lower the front tyre pressure by 0.1 bar (about 1.5 psi).
  • Move the brake balance 2% toward the rear, so the nose tucks in when you brake into the corner.

Check the driving too: turning in too fast, or while still hard on the brakes, makes any car push wide.

Oversteer: the rear steps out

The back of the car slides out, on the way into a corner or when you get back on the throttle. The rear needs more grip, or the front a little less.

  • Soften the rear anti-roll bar by about 15%, or stiffen the front one by about 10%.
  • Soften the rear springs a touch (about 6%), or firm up the front ones (about 4%).
  • Add 0.3° of negative camber at the rear.
  • Lower the rear tyre pressure by 0.1 bar.
  • Turn the rear toe 0.1° toward toe-in: it steadies the rear.
  • Move the brake balance 2% toward the front.

If it only happens when you get back on the throttle, start with the wheelspin fixes below.

Wheelspin: the wheels spin on exit

You get on the throttle out of a corner and the driven tyres spin: the car hardly pulls, or a rear-drive car slides with them.

  • Lower the differential’s acceleration lock by about 12%. On an all-wheel-drive car, lower the front acceleration lock by about 8% too.
  • Soften the springs (about 4%) and the anti-roll bar (about 10%) on the driven axle.
  • Lower the driven tyres’ pressure by 0.1 bar.
  • If first or second gear spins at every exit, a slightly longer ratio puts less force through the tyres.

Traction control (TCS) in the game’s difficulty settings helps too.

How to test a change

One change at a time
Change a single setting, then drive the same corner a few times. Two changes at once tell you nothing.
Small steps
Each change above is one small step. If it helped but not enough, take one more step the same way.
Parts before sliders
A slider can only move inside what the parts allow. Race springs, anti-roll bars and a race differential from the upgrade shop open those settings in the first place; the tyre compound and width decide how much grip there is to share.

In Copperquill: one tap per symptom

Festival Ledger has these fixes built in. On a car’s Tuning page, under On-track fixes, tap Understeer, Oversteer or Wheelspin: the tune moves by one step and every changed row gets a dot, so you know exactly which values to type in again.

Not sure what the car is doing? Set up Data Out and Live Doctor counts how much of each run was understeer, oversteer and wheelspin, measured from the game’s own data.

Questions

How do I fix understeer in Forza Horizon 6?

Give the front more grip: soften the front anti-roll bar, add a little negative camber at the front, lower the front tyre pressure by 0.1 bar and move the brake balance slightly to the rear. Change one setting at a time.

How do I stop oversteer in FH6?

Give the rear more grip: soften the rear anti-roll bar, add a little negative camber at the rear, lower the rear tyre pressure by 0.1 bar, add a touch of rear toe-in and move the brake balance slightly forward.

Why do my wheels spin coming out of corners?

The driven tyres get more power than they can put down. Lower the differential’s acceleration lock, soften the driven axle’s springs and anti-roll bar a little, or turn on traction control.

Should I change the anti-roll bars or the springs first?

The anti-roll bars. They shift grip between front and rear with the fewest side effects; adjust the springs after that.
